This past weekend was extremely significant. First off is the obvious celebration of Jesus’ resurrection. Secondly, though, was the celebration of World Water Day.About one in six individuals on our planet do not have access to any clean drinking water. A large number of those individuals reside in Africa. This has led to sickness and death for many, particularly to children, within these areas. The estimates are almost 4500 children per day die from diseases related to unclean water. Of the 2.2 million drinking water deaths in 2004, 90% were children under 5.

World Water Day is a day of activism and awareness on March 22nd, focused on the plight of water crises around the globe. Jesus himself constantly used water as analogies to himself, the Spirit, and more, and how difficult to understand that Jesus offers living water, when water often leads to death and distruction.

4:10 Bridge and BigStuf camps have partnered together to sell Water 4 Kenya (H2O4K). They asked individual churches to commit to help raise money for water relieve in their mission villages in Kenya. Here’s a promotional video they played during the camps:

Download Video

They also sold H2O4K water bottles during the camp sessions which also went towards the fund. For church leaders, I urge you to find more information about the water crisis around the globe and how you can get involved, and church members, talk to your leadership about it, and see what you can do. If you don’t partner with one of the organizations above, maybe seek ways to raise funds, through selling water during services or other creative methods.

“Everyone who drinks of this water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks of the water that I will give him will never be thirsty again. The water that I will give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life.” - John 4.13-14

Clean blood. Clean water. That is the central focus of blood:water mission. Dan Haseltine, lead singer of band Jars of Clay, came back after a trip to Africa with a vision to bring clean drinking water to the continent as well as help clean out the HIV epidemic throughout the country. Their mission is twofold and profound, and they have already made great strides, partnering with major activist Christian musicians, such as Derek Webb and and Christopher Williams. They currently promoting a movement to build 1000 wells in 1000 communities throughout Africa, a continent that has constantly struggled with having any drinking water that is clean of parasites.

According to their calculation, $1 provides one year of clean drinking water per African, largely because one well can provide clean water for a whole village for years. A clean well can greatly help the health of many, including the children. If you are interested, click here to donate.

This week’s ministry highlight is focused on TOMS Shoes. For every pair of shoes purchased, TOMS donates a pair of shoes to a child in need. The name TOMS is derived from the slogan “Shoes for Tomorrow.”The company has already successfully donated 10,000 pairs of shoes to children of Argentina in October of 2006. The effort was called a “Shoe Drop,” and employees not only donated the shoes, but coordinated with locals to actually put the shoes on the feet of the receiving children.

Here’s a video of their 2006 “Shoe Drop”:

Download Video

They are currently planning a “Shoe Drop” in Africa and there’s only about a week left before they leave. Your purchase this week will help put shoes on a child in Africa.

There is currently one style of shoes, available in a wide array colors and striped patterns. The shoes are of simple canvas construction, with a design that was inspired by a traditional Argentine shoe.

With an upstart blog, I have the flexibility to choose the rhythm and patterns that the blog will take. I think every Monday, I will highlight a ministry, organization, website, etc., that seek to further the kingdom in a creative or ingenious way.

Apparently, coffee in Rwanda is really, really good. One company is interested in helping to econically and socially reconcile the area by harvesting the coffee in Rwanda and selling it here in America. The Land of a Thousand Hills Coffee offers partnerships with churches, so that churches can be proactive about world change in something as small as offering coffee on Sundays. “This is not charity. Rwandans want to work, not receive a short-term handout. This is both a blessing and a hand up. Additional profits from sales provide widows with micro-loans, they become entrepreneurs, learn to be self-sufficient and tend to that spark that God has put in them.” (from here)
