It is with much sobriety and humility I set out on this task of this blog. Up to now, any discussions of theology were specifically under the confines of friends or a personal blog interested in raising more questions than seeking answers. I do not intent for this to be place of name-calling, rock-throwing, slander, hate, pride, or any other sin that may or may not arise in me or my fellow readers. My ultimate intention in this anonymous, communal world of blogging is to seek truth, and do so in a way that is loving, because ‘Love rejoices in truth’ (1 Cor 13.6).
Along the line of Tim Challies, I want to lay the groundwork for who I am, so that you know from what position I do approach the Gospel. Although I seek to strip away as much cultural baggage as I can bring to the table, I do approach with mindset based upon truths that I see in how the world plays itself out and how the Gospel plays itself out. I am…
1.) Christian : I do not prescribe to a ‘religion,’ meaning I do not believe in a system to save me. I believe in the substitutionary atonement work of Christ. My faith in Him bring salvation and the work of the Spirit brings sanctification into my life so that I may have eternal life.
2.) Protestant : I believe in the five solas as described during the Protestant Reformation. In my understanding of Scripture, all five of these hold up as true in light of what God has revealed to us in His Word.
3.) Evangelical : I believe in the Good News of the Gospel and that it is the Good News for the world in God’s plan of redemption. I believe it is the call of every Christian to share this Gospel with the world as part of God’s overall plan of redemption.
4.) Reformed : I believe in the grace of God to individuals dead in their sins. I believe that no individual can do anything to save themselves, but only God, through justification by faith, can bring about salvation in an individual.
5.) Progressive : Although I respect and think we can learn a lot from our historical roots in our faith, I am open to defining Church and the Christian life in light of the current culture. That is not to say that our definitions should not be biblical first, but on areas that the Bible is silent on, we should seek to engage our current time, culture, and generations to bring about lives and churches that are glorifying to God.
6.) Libertarian : I politically stand for allowing people individual freedoms as long as they do not infringe on others individual freedoms.
Although this likely starts putting me in a box, please note that I am human, and therefor subject to change. I am fairly open-minded and willing to allow for change as long as given adequate and truthful reasons to do so. I look forward to this time together and hope you enjoy our times as well.
